Tacos & Tequila embodies the cool modernism of the new Mexico City while incorporating traditional elements of Mexican style and high-end Las Vegas panache. The color mixture of old and new creates a vivid picture of brushed aluminum, dark wood, leather, bright fabrics and colored glass. Lit from within, the breathtaking panels stretch across the entire length of the restaurant floor and across the common area, connecting the T&T retail store and walk-up daiquiri bar.

So, here’s a place you should probably never visit when you’re high. “High Society” inside the NOVE Italiano Restaurant is way up on the 51st floor of The Palms Resort in Las Vegas. This is a Sunday afternoon dayclub where you can drink and feast to the music of the DJ and relax with friends while checking out the view of the entire Las Vegas valley.
Executive Chef Geno Bernardo has created an awesome spread of delectables for you to enjoy. It is a buffet of little breakfast items, sandwiches, pizzas, lox, cheeses, fresh fruit, pastries, cakes and desserts. There are also numerous hot breakfast type dishes. A chef stands at his Fratatta station offering to cook up omlettes and other egg dishes to your order. I sampled as many of the dishes as I could get into me yesterday and they were all awesome!
The décor in this place is bordering on the bizarre, but all in a very charming sort of way. The women wear leotards and brightly colored tutus, and the men are in bowler hats, vested suits and little ties. Throughout the place there are decorated cakes sitting in the oddest places, like on top of candelabras, with cupcakes in the candle holders or on tables off of the buffet area. There are lit candles up and down the walls and all over the place. Tulle is strung here and there to add a touch more color. It really puts you in the mind of Alice in Wonderland in a way and its all very fun.
The girl's costumes were adorable, colorful tutus
The main dining area of the restaurant isn’t all at that large, so make sure you make your reservations ahead of time. The booths are large and very comfy and surround the long tables of tasty dishes.
Marinated Vegies
You can go just to hang out at the bar if you like. You don’t have to go there to dine. The diners get a wrist band, but others just go in to drink and hang out and enjoy the music with their friends.
Many different types of delicious salads
The main focus of “High Society” is service. I have never had such great servers in any restaurant, regardless of the amount of stars they were claiming. It got to the point where I forced myself to quit looking at the staff because every time I did they were right there at the table asking to help me. Instead of trying to get your waiter’s attention, you try to not get your waiter’s attention. I don’t know how many people waited on us for the couple hours we were in there but it must have been ten of them. Every time they passed by they offered something, either help, clean silverware, a frozen cheesecake lollypop, a shot of liquor, they just kept coming.
There was always a girl dancing next to the buffet
I think they should have called this place “Roman Orgy” and not “High Society.” Really, the amazing food was a collection of treasures and I didn’t even want to leave. There were so many dishes I wanted to try and I kept going even after I was full. I was disappointed that I never got to the pizza my friend was raving about all through our meal, but there is only so much room in my stomach. I had fried potatoes, lox, bagels, the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had, slices of salami, all kinds of sauces, cheeses, salads, oh, I just can’t remember it all.
Loads and loads of delightful, yummy desserts!
And then it was time for dessert. There is such an array of gorgeous little desserts and cakes. I picked a few and then I was so far on overload I just had to stop. I had to admit defeat. I stopped eating.
A Fritatta Chef to cook up your every egg whim
The other thing they are real big on in this Sunday afternoon only dayclub is fun. And that would be Fun with a capital F. Oh, they encourage fun!
Many cakes and pastires
There is a pretty girl dancing next to the buffet at all times. They trade off now and then. They are cute, they are fun and are just having a blast up there dancing around. These are not the emaciated stripper types you see elsewhere in casinos and clubs. These are fun, healthy looking girls just having a great time. They were the only employees I could safely look at because I knew that dancer wasn’t going to come running over to help me if I looked, like the rest of them did.
There is only one complaint I have about High Society and that is the music. It is the latest and greatest techno beat. And I can’t stand techno beat. It is so loud that it is impossible to have any type of conversation with anyone. You have to shout into each other’s ear and use a lot of pointing and sign language. I guess I’m just old. I like to be able to talk over the music without yelling. I don’t think it is the over fifty crowd they are looking for, though. The under thirty types in there were having an absolute blast.
Food is constantly attending to by the chefs and others
High Society has a dress code. Sneakers and beachwear isn’t allowed. While jeans are okay, you do need to dress for the place. This is intended to be your nightclub during the day where you can feast and prepare to go party all night. It is your fun place on an otherwise boring Sunday afternoon.
The fantastic view from "High Society"
While my friend and I were waiting for the valet to bring back our car, a young couple from San Diego recognized our dining room bracelet and struck up a conversation. They thought High Society was just the best. I mentioned my dislike of the music, but he said they loved it. He said his wife was dancing on the tables the entire time they were in there. She claimed she wasn’t on the table. He raved about the food and the whole experience, as we did. His only questions was, “Is it a party? Is it a buffet? Is it both?” His wife didn’t say much, probably from all that not dancing on the tabletops and sat quietly with her floating collection of helium balloons.
An inside balcony to enjoy the view, but I think this is only open during normal restaurant hours
There are many reasons you wouldn’t want to be high in this dayclub. First of all, everything around you is pretty trippy and I’m afraid either you’d be convinced you have actually landed in a fairytale and freak or you’d be laughing so hard as you discovered things like cakes on candlesticks that you just wouldn’t be able to function. Then, if you survive that, there is the endless supply of incredible food and drinks. You’d awake after a few hours later face down in a tiramisu pudding. And if that didn’t happen, you’d pass out looking out the window at the view. You can see the entire Las Vegas valley from that 51st floor of The Palms Resort from three different directions. I got some incredible photos. So, save the spleef for later, this is an experience you’re going to want to remember.
High Society starts at 1 p.m. every Sunday at Nove Italiano inside Palms Casino Resort. The dayclub menu is $30 per person. Guests must be 21 years of age or older to attend. Admission is free and table reservations are strongly recommended. For more information, VIP tables and bottle reservations, visit novelasvegas.com or call 702.942.6800 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 702.942.6800 end_of_the_skype_highlighting.
CORRECTION: The dress code is actually “anything goes,” so feel free to come right in from the pool or as you are.
It was a hot, arid, desert night in June of 1975, when I last stepped foot inside Circus Circus. I remember the night very, very well. It was the night I was escorted out of the slot bank area of the casino by two huge security goons for committing the crime of underage gambling. The bastards, ruining my good time like that. Anyway, I was asked to cover the grand opening of Rock & Ritas and guess where it is located? It is inside Circus Circus Casino. I was going to pass, still being traumatized like I was, but then their publicist twisted my arm and said she really wanted me to be there. So, last night I took those first steps back inside the scene of the crime.
I hesitated at first, but forced myself to go through that front door. The place seems smaller in this millennium, given that it is now surrounded by so many newer, bigger Strip properties. The first thing of notable interest was a very large sign that warned minors must keep out of the gambling areas. I’d like to personally take credit for that.
No Minors allowed in gambling areas of Circus Circus
There are some differences in the place now, although, I don’t detect any serious change of theme in there. There are no longer trapeze artists flying around and a regular circus going on in there. I couldn’t help but notice the security guards don’t look nearly are gnarly as they used to under Vegas Mob rule. Now, they are rather friendly. I even had to nudge a yawning one and tell him to stay awake.
I got to Rock & Rita’s early due to there being hardly any traffic on the Las Vegas Strip. Our President is in town and I think everyone found other things to do in fear of being trapped behind a Presidential motorcade. So I wandered around the restaurant and spoke with the manager for awhile. He was terribly excited for opening night and everyone was rushing around taking care of last minute details and plans.
David Tuttleman, the Manager of Rock & Rita's
The place is set up with serious partying in mind, but there are plenty of tables for a nice, sit down barbeque meal. The menu has the usual features of ribs, steaks and fish with a large selection of the appetizers you’re used to seeing in Vegas. I had a couple of their hot dog sliders and they were great! I also sampled a little of their macaroni & cheese of which they are rightly very proud. I saw someone eating the baby back ribs that looked awesome. So, of course, I interrupted his dinner to ask how they were. He looked up at me only long enough to tell me they were, “really, really good,” then he dove back in like he hadn’t eaten in days.
Vladymyr Buryanov shows me his stuff
The thing that makes this place different and such a party place is that they feature flair bartenders. My mom used to tell me stories about this when she would visit the islands in the Caribbean. She just had a blast watching and interacting with these guys. Well, this restaurant/bar has more than their share of the flair bartenders. And mom was right, as mom’s always are, they are a load of fun!
Vladymyr balances some liquer
The guys twirl and toss and balance bottles and cups while making your drink. It is sexy and fun and of course, the guys are just full of personality. Showing off is what they live for. Sometimes they perform alone while pouring your drink and other times they are working together as a team.
Dario Doimo admiring his bottle in the air for a split second before making the drink
There are several bartenders working the bar, breaking into their drink dance on demand and sometimes just because they want to. But, wait, there’s more! They have a stage and actually have little bartender shows, at least they did last night. I don’t know if it is regular feature. I think this has just taken pole dancing to a whole new level. There is no pole, for one. And it’s guys, for two. It is juggling, but it’s not juggling. This is much more entertaining than having some emaciated chick hanging upside down showing you her stuff. These are performing guys doing a dance with the ingredients to make your drink, all to the beat of some great tunes. Good times!
Nicolas Saint-Jean makes a drink while balancing it on a steel spoon
Their drink menu includes the usual favorites but also has drinks like “Suck it From the Bucket” and the “Toilet Bowl.” These people have a great sense of humor. And yes, you get to keep that souvenir “cup” it came in.
Colin Griffiths and Vladymyr Buryanov, flair bartenders at Rock & Rita's
I don’t do parties well. I’m usually the person in the corner dinking around with her BlackBerry all night. People came up from time to time to say hello, sometimes I knew who they were and sometimes I didn’t. I find it all rather unnerving sometimes. I just don’t know what to say. By the time the place was wall to wall people, I thought it was time to go home to work on my video and photos from the night.
Rock & Rita’s seems to have accomplished what they set out to do. They have a hot, partying place for tourists and locals alike. It is really fun in there. It is even a safe place to bring the kids for a great dinner. And they got me to overcome my fear of the clowns at Circus Circus. I’m pretty sure I’ll be back.

Last night I got to go to my most favorite buffet in Las Vegas, the M Resort’s Studio B. This is technically in Henderson, not in Vegas, but it isn’t all that far from the Strip.
Round One at the Buffet
You certainly want to go to this place very hungry! There is more selection here than I have seen at any casino buffet, by at least twice as much. The food is also very, very good. It is attractively displayed, well prepared and so tasty!
Nom Nom Nom
The buffet stations are in a line but it winds around in there like a long snake. They also have wine which is included in the meal price.
